Robert McDowell- a New Zealand born Mining Engineer turned herbalist purchased 219-221 George Street in the 1980's. Travelling the world, living in Peru, Washington, and London whilst working for the World Bank, Robert decided that Bathurst was the place which supported his new philosophy on life. The Building had an interesting history- originally it was built (circa 1870's) to be a boarding house, then was used as a school for a short time before finding its feet as a boarding house again. The McDowell's partially restored the old building, and the very successful Bathurst Traditional Medicine Centre was conducted from the premises until 2005. Robert McDowell and wife Catherine (also a qualified Herbalist, Reiki Master and NCAS EFA level 1 general coach) developed and made very successful the Herbal revolution in treating animals with herbs in Australia, from 219-221 George Street. Catherine McDowell (Cox) is a 5th Generation Bathurstian, who grew up on a local farm, passionate about the land, Horses and horsemanship, and all things truly Australian with flavours of other cultures. Lovers of all things in nature, and beautiful environments, it seemed sensible to restore this wonderful old building, combining all of the things that we love, and to share with others the unique ambiance that the premises inspires. Like we have said before- you will be surprised at what Bathurst and La Maison has to offer!
